Bresnahan’s Health Care Cuts Have Put Pennsylvanians Between a (Sham)rock and a Hard Place

Scranton, PENNSYLVANIA - Ahead of the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade in Scranton, Affordable Pennsylvania launched a billboard calling on Congressman Rob Bresnahan to stop cutting Medicaid. The billboard is located at the intersection of Mulberry St and N Washington Ave in downtown Scranton, towards the end of the parade route.

“Congressman Bresnahan promised not to trade stocks and he promised not to cut Medicaid. Then he went and sold stock in Medicaid providers before voting for historic cuts to the program,” said Krysten, home health aide from Scranton. “As a health care professional and a Medicaid recipient, I know how devastating these cuts will be to our community, where hundreds of thousands rely on this care, Congressman Bresnahan is supposed to be looking out for his constituents, not his bottom line. He needs to reverse these cuts and fight for affordable health care for NEPA.”

Last summer, Congressman Rob Bresnahan sold six figures worth of stock in Medicaid providers before voting to cut the program by over $900 billion to pay for bigger tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. Medicaid provides health coverage to almost 3 million Pennsylvanians, including over 200,000 Pennsylvanians in PA-08. These cuts will rip care away from hundreds of thousands of Pennsylvanians, threaten 60,000 health care jobs across the Commonwealth, and put several local hospitals at risk of closure, including Geisinger Community Medical Center, Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center, Lehigh Valley Hospital Hazleton, Moses Taylor Hospital, and Endless Mountains Health Systems.

Last month, Affordable Pennsylvania launched its first ad in PA-08 as part of a new seven-figure accountability campaign across TV, digital, and print media holding Rep. Bresnahan accountable for Medicaid cuts. The ad features a local nurse who calls out Bresnahan for offloading stock in Medicaid providers before voting for historic cuts to the program.
