PENNSYLVANIA – This week, the House of Representatives is expected to take up a vote on the Farm Bill. The current Farm Bill proposal does nothing to address the growing food insecurity crisis created by the $186.5 billion in SNAP cuts included in the Republican Tax Law that Reps. Ryan Mackenzie, Rob Bresnahan, and Scott Perry voted for last summer.

“The rising price of groceries is ridiculous. Feeding my family is a necessity, not a luxury, and SNAP allows me to put food on the table for my two daughters,” said Aidalis, a PA-07 constituent. “But Rep. Ryan Mackenzie voted to cut SNAP and take away food access for families like mine just to give bigger tax breaks to billionaires. I am calling on my congressman to reverse his cuts to SNAP and fight for us instead.”

Last month, Rep. Bresnahan already voted against reversing the SNAP cuts he voted for last year during the Farm Bill markup in the House Agriculture Committee. Rep. Bresnahan also voted to keep provisions in the bill that protect pesticide makers from lawsuits related to people getting sick from pesticide use during the bill markup.

The Republican Tax Law was the biggest hit to SNAP in the history of the program to pay for bigger tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. These cuts threaten the very fate of food assistance in our Commonwealth, where 1 in 8 Pennsylvanians face food insecurity. SNAP supports over 110,000 in PA-07, over 140,000 in PA-08, and over 120,000 Pennsylvanians in PA-10. New research from the Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children found that over 1 million Pennsylvania families are at risk of losing some or all of their SNAP benefits by 2034, and that SNAP cuts in the Republican Tax Law could result in up to $15.9 billion in economic development losses in the Commonwealth.
