Rep. Perry’s Votes in DC Are Making It Harder for Pennsylvanians to Put Food on the Table

Harrisburg, PENNSYLVANIA - Last weekend, Affordable Pennsylvania unveiled an ice sculpture at the Harrisburg Ice and Fire Festival that displays the consequences of Congressman Scott Perry’s actions in Washington that have made it harder for Pennsylvanians to put food on the table, including his support of cost-raising tariffs and his historic cuts to SNAP, critical food assistance that benefits nearly 2 million Pennsylvanians and 120,000 in South Central PA.

“When I lost my job, federal food assistance helped us survive. My family was struggling to make ends meet, but this assistance helped us put food on the table," said Dale of Boiling Springs. “Food is a basic necessity but rising costs have put healthy food out of reach for so many. Grocery prices are through the roof thanks to tariffs. Despite these tariffs costing working families more than a thousand dollars last year, Congressman Scott Perry has voted for them multiple times. He should be fighting for lower costs for his constituents, not supporting this tax on them. I’m calling on Rep. Perry to stand up to Trump’s tariffs.”

Last summer, Congressman Perry voted for the Republican Tax Law, which cut the federal food assistance program by $186.5 billion to pay for bigger tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations. These cuts threaten food assistance in the Commonwealth, where 1 in 8 Pennsylvanians face food insecurity.  They also harm Pennsylvania’s economy, as over 8 percent of all food and beverage purchases across the Commonwealth are paid for SNAP.

As more cuts go into effect this month, more Pennsylvanians have begun to lose their SNAP benefits, including parents of teenagers, veterans, people experiencing homelessness, and people aging out of foster care. State officials estimate over 140,000 Pennsylvanians could lose their food assistance benefits due to these cuts.

Congressman Perry has also voted multiple times over the last year to continue Trump’s illegal tariffs that have cost American households about $1,000 on average last year. Grocery inflation is at its highest since 2022 due to these tariffs, with Pennsylvania groceries up 8.2% over the last year, more than every other state in the country. Reports estimate tariffs could cost families nearly $5,000 more in annual grocery costs.
