PENNSYLVANIA - This week, the House is planning to vote on legislation that puts Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and other key programs that working Pennsylvanians rely on at risk. This amendment would prohibit the government from spending more money than it brings in, forcing Congress to choose between different priorities rather than increase the deficit.

“While Pennsylvanians are currently struggling under their massive cuts to health care and nutrition assistance, House Republicans are planning to further risk critical assistance for their constituents. When they’re giving tax breaks to billionaires, blowing up the deficit isn’t a concern, but they need to further risk programs that help hundreds of thousands in their districts to balance the budget? That doesn’t seem like they’re in Washington to fight for Pennsylvanians and their needs,” said Rachele Fortier, executive director of Affordable Pennsylvania. “These congressmen need to get their priorities in order and start serving Pennsylvanians by reversing their cuts to health care and food assistance, taxing the rich, and fighting for lower costs for everyday people."

Congressmen Ryan Mackenzie, Rob Bresnahan, and Scott Perry have already prioritized federal spending on the wealthy elite over working families, voting to fund billionaire tax breaks while cutting critical assistance like SNAP and Medicaid. Rather than threatening programs that working Pennsylvanians rely on to reduce spending, these congressmen and their colleagues should make the ultra-wealthy and big corporations pay their fair share in taxes.

If these congressmen, especially self-proclaimed deficit hawk Rep. Perry, really cared about reducing federal spending, they would not have voted for the Republican Tax Law that increases the deficit by trillions to pay for billionaire tax breaks, or support the war on Iran that is costing the U.S. billions of dollars a day.
