Pennsylvania Families Face Food Insecurity Due To Republican Tax Law SNAP Cuts

PENNSYLVANIA – Pennsylvania families are facing higher grocery bills and greater food insecurity after Reps. Ryan Mackenzie, Rob Bresnahan, and Scott Perry voted for the Republican Tax Law, which made the largest cuts to SNAP in the program's history to give tax breaks to billionaires, and subsequently resulted in at least 210,000 Pennsylvanians losing access, 60,000 of them children.

"I've always worked hard to provide for my family, but lately it feels like we're falling further behind no matter what we do," said Amanda, a resident of Millersburg. "When groceries keep getting more expensive and help gets harder to access, families like mine are left with impossible choices. No parent should have to wonder whether there's enough food in the house to get their kids through the week. I want Rep. Perry to tell me - why are billionaires more important than children going hungry?”

A new report shows Pennsylvania has experienced one of the steepest SNAP enrollment declines in the country since the law took effect, even as families continue to struggle with rising food costs. Nearly 2 million Pennsylvanians—including approximately 650,000 children—rely on SNAP to help put food on the table, yet Mackenzie, Bresnahan, and Perry chose tax breaks for billionaires over helping working families afford groceries. Their votes are forcing more Pennsylvania parents to make impossible choices and leaving more children at risk of going hungry. Affordable Pennsylvania is calling on these elected officials to lower costs.

As families continue to struggle with the rising costs of groceries, housing, utilities, and health care, Affordable Pennsylvania is calling on Mackenzie, Bresnahan, and Perry to reverse course and support policies that lower costs and strengthen the programs that help working families put food on the table.
