Pennsylvania Moms and Families are Feeling the Pinch of Increased Costs for Everyday Living Expenses
PENNSYLVANIA - On Thursday, Affordable Pennsylvania held an event for South Central Pennsylvania moms and caregivers to invest in themselves. These women discussed the impacts of rising costs – from health care to groceries and utility bills – and wrote postcards to their congressman while enjoying some self-care activities.
"As a doctor, I understand the need for reliable health care, especially with my family's medical needs. But when health care subsidies ended, my monthly insurance premium for a family of four skyrocketed from just over $300 to more than $1600,” said Dr. Gina, a PA-10 constituent. “That's not a manageable expense; it's a crisis forced upon us. Congressman Scott Perry needs to understand that his policies have a real and devastating impact on the financial stability and well-being of families like mine."
Pennsylvania moms and their families were already struggling to make ends meet before Rep. Scott Perry voted for the Republican Tax Law last summer, which made historic cuts to Medicaid and SNAP to give bigger tax breaks to billionaires. Medicaid provides health coverage to nearly 3 million Pennsylvanians, including more than 180,000 in PA-10. Over 120,000 of Rep. Perry’s constituents rely on SNAP benefits to put food on the table.
Congressman Perry opposed extending critical health care tax credits that benefit 25,000 of his constituents before they expired, jacking up Pennie costs by an average of 102% across Pennsylvania and 180% for his own constituents - the largest district-wide average premium increase across the Commonwealth. More than 145,000 Pennsylvanians have dropped their Pennie coverage in recent months since their premiums skyrocketed, according to state data.
Rep. Perry has repeatedly supported Trump’s tariff power, voting six times over the last year to keep the president’s sweeping tariffs in place, which are raising prices on working families, small businesses, and consumers across Pennsylvania and the nation.
Congressman Perry also voted to continue the war in Iran, which has driven up gas prices to over $4.60 per gallon across our Commonwealth. Since the beginning of the Iran conflict, inflation rose to 3.8%, compounding already fast-rising prices.
Earlier this month, Affordable Pennsylvania released a storybook highlighting the stories from mothers, caregivers, and families, including those in PA-10, who are struggling to make ends meet as costs continue to rise.
